Check the live forecast above for Harvey Bay’s current conditions. This coastal inlet on Western Australia’s south-west coast sits in a Mediterranean climate zone, meaning mild, wet winters and warm, dry summers, with sea breezes often moderating the heat.

What makes Harvey Bay’s weather different from Perth?

Harvey Bay is about 140 kilometres south of Perth, so it shares the same broad climate pattern but tends to be a few degrees cooler in summer due to its more exposed coastal position. Winter rainfall is slightly higher than in Perth, as the belt of westerly winds can bring more consistent showers across the bay. The afternoon sea breeze, known locally as the “Fremantle Doctor” effect, still reaches Harvey Bay but arrives later in the day.

When is the best time to visit Harvey Bay?

If you prefer warm, settled weather, the period from December to March offers average maximums around 28–30°C, with low humidity and very little rain. April and October are also pleasant, with lighter winds and fewer crowds. Winter (June–August) is cool and damp, with average highs near 17°C, but the bay is often calmer for boating.

Does Harvey Bay ever get cyclones?

Cyclones are extremely rare this far south. The most serious tropical systems stay north of Geraldton. Harvey Bay can experience the tail-end of a system as heavy rain or gusty winds, but direct cyclone impacts are not a concern.

Why is Harvey Bay often windier in summer?

The strong heating of the inland during summer creates a pressure difference that draws a cool sea breeze onshore. This breeze picks up speed across the open water of the bay, making afternoons noticeably windy from December to February.

Can I swim at Harvey Bay in winter?

Yes, but the water temperature drops to around 15–17°C, which many people find cold. A wetsuit is recommended. The air temperature is also cool, so wind chill can make beach time less comfortable.
