Check the live forecast above for current conditions, then use the Sydney radar loop to track rain in real time. The Bureau of Meteorology’s Terrey Hills radar shows precipitation intensity across the Sydney basin, giving you a clear picture of what’s heading your way over the next few hours.

How does the Sydney weather radar work?

The radar at Terrey Hills sends out pulses of radio energy. When those pulses hit rain, hail or drizzle, they bounce back. The signal strength is converted into the colour scale you see on the loop: light green for drizzle, yellow for moderate showers, orange and red for heavy bursts. The image refreshes every six minutes, so you can watch storms develop and move in near-real time. For street-level detail, the 64 km range (sydney radar 64 km) is best; for a broader view, switch to the 128 km range (sydney radar 128).

What can the radar tell you today?

The live forecast above shows the broad outlook. The radar loop (sydney radar 128 today) confirms whether that forecast is playing out right now. If you see a band of orange moving east on the 128 km view, you have roughly 30–60 minutes before it reaches you. For suburbs closer to the coast, the sydney radar 64 km range will show finer-scale showers that might otherwise be missed. Remember: radar is excellent for nowcasting but not for sydney weather radar 7 days predictions — that’s why you pair it with the forecast above and the seven-day outlook on the same page.

Why does the Sydney radar sometimes show speckles that aren’t rain?

The radar occasionally picks up birds, bats, smoke plumes or atmospheric clutter. The Bureau filters most false echoes, but temporary speckles can appear on a single scan. They usually vanish on the next scan, so wait for two or three updates before reacting.

Which range should I use for my suburb?

If you live within about 30 km of Terrey Hills, the 64 km loop (sydney radar 64) gives the crispest detail. For suburbs farther out or for a regional view — the Blue Mountains to the coast — switch to the 128 km loop. The Australia weather hub has links to both.
